MID-SUMMER NEWS

 Upcoming Seaspray Events 2025

Seaspray Canadian Nationals. Sept 5, 6 and 7th in conjunction with the BeachCat Regatta at Newell Sailing Club.  NOR at bottom of this email.  Online Registration is available on Newell Sailing Club website.  Please register beforehand to help with planning.  Purchase the meal package if you like.

Newell Sailing Club's Catamaran Clinic
There were seven Seasprays, three different Nacra models, and a 20 foot Super Cat at this year's clinic.  A club potluck supper on Saturday night was well attended by clinic attendees and the club's membership. Good sailing winds happened on Saturday and Sunday after damp mornings.  The rainy mornings allowed for sailing club veranda impromptu sailing discussions on a number of topics.  Due to the higher winds no practice course was set.   The general sailing on Saturday and Sunday afternoons was challenging and with the strong winds a lot of exhilarating sailing took place.  No mishaps occurred so these clinics seem to be helping the skill level of our clinic attendees.  Friday allowed for a number of new to catamaran participants to get a ride on some of the bigger cats.  We also had a drone pilot get on the water video that I haven't been able to secure yet.

Results from the Prairie Wind Regatta July 12 and 13th 2025.

Congratulations
Richard Braul 1st (Also awarded the Seaspray Alberta Provincial Trophy)  Hamish Ferguson 2nd and Mike Sonnie 3rd. Kieren Mills 4th and Dave Mills 5th.
There was a good showing of Seasprays at this event.  The Alberta Seaspray Provincial trophy resurfaced when Gord VanGunst from Glenmore Sailboats offered it to the Seaspray Association as that business downsized and moved into Auto Marine Specialties Ltd. in Calgary.

Zebra Mussels Survey for Alberta Residents

You may have already seen the article in the attached link but our oldest daughter asked that we forward it to our Alberta sailing friends.  If you think it is worthwhile perhaps it could be forwarded to the Alberta members of the Seaspray fleet.

Thanks.

Donna and Stan

The link to the survey is embedded in the news article.

I think it's good that a workable solution to the mussel prevention problem is being sought.

Stay and Bridle Repair Info

If you are wondering what these items are you probably haven't had a side or forestay break.

These are tools and parts along with 1 x 19 stainless steel wire you will need to make a new stay.

Nicopress ferrrules and stainless steel thimbles are your only choice for parts to make a proper stay or bridle.  Watch YouTube to learn how to do this properly.  As our boats age, you will find that you will be the best person to attend to repairs, as local sailboat businesses are changing and aging fleets mean that parts/repair people are going to get increasingly scarce.
Things like stays, trampolines, fibreglass repair, rudder/dagger systems and other items will likely need work if you sail regularly.  Some of our boats are getting close to sixty years old but can still be in excellent shape, provided their owners have maintained them.  Most of the SeaSprays you see now are at least 40 years old.  Continue to make your repairs and improvements with longevity, quality, precision and ease of use in mind.
There are some excellent sources of information on this boat on our website and other sites. Continue to exchange your knowledge on repairs if you have knowhow and experience. Cover your tramp and rudder blades when the boat is not in the water at your sailing site. Consider joining an active club and promote your Seaspray as a class choice.

A good example of a split tramp.  An existing one piece tramp can be made into a split tramp.

SEASPRAY ASSN. AGM

As an association we need a few extra directors to keep the focus for our fleet.  We haven’t had a meeting for awhile so look forward to one at the Canadian Nationals in September.   At the moment we would welcome a couple more directors to help with the continual development of our fleet.  We have an active Secretary/Treasurer and newsletter editor but a President and Vice President would be a welcome addition.  Preferably active Seaspray sailors but anyone who attends our functions and has an interest in promoting our fleet would be most welcome.  As your newsletter editor I look forward to someone taking my role but it won’t happen if we continue to avoid having a regular changing executive and a meeting at least once a year.

AGM PROXY

AGENDA for the Canadian SeaSpray Assn. Annual General Meeting to be held during the Nationals Regatta

Appoint or elect a new President and a couple of directors to add to the Secretary/Treasurer and Newsletter Editor.  Hear and approve the financial report.  Other old and new business.

If you are unable to attend and you may complete the proxy voting form in order to have your vote counted - be sure to pass it along to the person you designate.

TRAMPOLINE MAINTENANCE

Many of us have modified or replaced our one piece tramp with a two piece one.  The two piece trampoline is much easier to keep tight, install and remove.   I have sometimes found the remains of rotten pieces of doweling in sections of where the bolt rope should be.   If you are having trouble with your trampoline pulling away from the side aluminum extrusion, some modifications, repairs or simply tying in the leading and trailing edge of the trampoline along the sides will fix this problem.  Since this is still pre-season for most of you, take a look at your boat and make a few necessary repairs or modifications now rather than mid-season when you should be sailing as often as possible.  Many times the aluminum extrusion needs to be gap adjusted or replaced.  You can use what is called an “awning extrusion” from a canvas shop as a replacement.  The bolt rope should be an appropriate size for a snug fit.  If you are getting your trampoline restitched or modified into a two piece one, it might be time to check the side and forward bolt rope sizes.  Maybe you can increase the bolt rope size for a better fit into the extrusion.  Check it out.

 BOAT RESTORATION PROJECT AT NSC

We will be restoring a Seaspray at Newell Sailing Club this season.  If you can help out with this project please get involved.  You can email back to this address and I will contact you about times, etc.  Thanks to Mike Ball for donating a Seaspray boom!

Boom end sheeting parts.  Boom bale for two inch tube (to hang the fixed becket block), Carbo Air Harken Single Fixed becket block #348, Carbo Air Harken traveller #353, Carbo Air Harken Pivoting lead block/471Carbo cam, and a 5/16" mainsheet line 20'.  You of course will have installed chain plates on each transom for the traveller line.  Traveller line parts - chain plate mounted on each transom, suitable length traveller line with a Harken micro block #224 on one end, a schackle on each chain plate that allows a free running traveller rope (a micro block would be better), and a clam cleat mounted on the rear beam end of the center tube (allows adjustment of the traveller line length).

OTHER STUFF

Check out the Lake Newell Sailing Challenge on the Newell Sailing Club's website, Alberta BeachCat Website, Windsurfing and Sailing Lake Newell website for a different aspect of your sailing activities.  Perhaps you can incorporate destination sailing at your sailing venue.  This can add a lot of interest and give your sailing activities a purpose.
